Eco-Bag of the Day: The 'I Love MCR' Tote

This has got to be one of my favourite eco-bags! It's part of the 'I love MCR' campaign that launched after the horrible riots that took place in the city this past August, with sales of the official campaign merchandise supporting Forever Manchester and Reclaim.

I got mine from the official kiosk in Halle Sqaure in Arndale, but you can also get it online here.

A Shopping Bag That Dissolves in Water? YES!

This is just great! Innovative, practical & realistic!

Puma recently took a step in the right direction & ditched its plastic shopping bags for a 100% bidegradable alternative made from cornstarch.

The new & improved bags are capable of completely degrading within just 3 months in a home compost pile. However, if shoppers do not have access to a compost pile or are not willing to wait for it to naturally degrade, the bag can also be completely dissovled in water in a matter of minutes! this replacement, according to Puma, will save 293 tons of paper & 192 tons of plastic each year.

Don't believe it? Watch the video below!

Also watch this video of another creative use of Puma's 'Clever Little Bag' :

Way to go Puma!

My Biotiful Bag

I am absolutely in love with the 'My Biotiful Bag' at the moment! Everything from all the different styles, colours, and the statement behind it is amazing!

Here is the philosophy behind the My Biotiful Bag as stated in their website:
Green is the new black!
A line of accessories for the stylish eco-conscious citizen. Unpretentious, fun and practical bags that go anywhere – to the market or the office, on weekends or sporting occasions, around the city or to the beach. For men and women of all ages.

My biotiful bag is designed between Paris and Miami, with a truly international and modern spirit of environment, community, optimism, and style.
My biotiful bag is organic (“biologique”) because it is made of organic cotton. Our cotton is GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard).

My biotiful bag is green because all materials used are as natural as possible, recycled, or biodegradable, and our dyes are AZO-free (no heavy metals).

My biotiful bag is ethical because we work with factories that respect local labor laws on working conditions and safety, prohibit child labor, allow unions, and do not discriminate.

My biotiful bag is chic because it is stylish, easy, contemporary, and fun. My biotiful bag respects the environment, and is “biotifully correct”. A new range of wearable easy styles and colors will be introduced each season. The earth-friendly “it-bag” has arrived.

Our mission is to offer a line of fashionable and environmentally friendly accessories in practical and multifunctional styles at affordable prices. We want to make the environment a cleaner and safer place for all, by promoting and supporting organic farming and thereby ensuring safety conditions for those working in the cotton industry, one of the most toxic on the planet. Tens of thousands of deaths each year are directly linked to the cotton industry’s toxic destruction. My biotiful bag will help contribute to making our planet a better place to be. By wearing my biotiful bag, you raise awareness and support for organic cotton in style! Less waste, less pollution, better for the planet, better for the people…

Here's Kim Kardashian with her Biotiful Bag.

The bag comes in six different colours (pink,  orange, red, green, brown, & blue) and six different styles and sizes for different uses. There's the 'Weekend Bag' (in the first picture) and the 'Tote Bag' like Kim's, the 'Potfolio Bag', the 'Messenger Bag', and then the 'Large Flat Pouch' and the 'Small Flat Pouch'. Very practical & stylish that's for sure!

Shop the collection here and check out all the colours and styles.

Trapped in London, but with a Green purchase!

If you follow me on twitter then you surely know the horror I've been through these past few days. Basically I've been stuck in London since Friday morning, not knowing when or how I will go back home to Amman. After taking off from Manchester safely and landing in London, the plane remained parked in the runway of Heathrow Airport for 2 hours and a half because of the snow. There was a queue; 20 planes ahead of us! So I missed my connecting flight to Amman as I just sat in the plane and watched the Royal Jordanian take off right before my eyes. How frustrating?

So long story short, I stayed in Heathrow Airport till the next morning, not sleeping for a second, waiting for the next flight out. After 3 cancelled flights, I gave up and left the airport to stay at a family friend's house. But thank God I am now back home :) after 4 days of frustration and disappointments I landed in Amman today around 2 am. It was one adventure I will never forget... Many bad memories but I also got to meet many new amazing people ;) and it also made me appreciate being home with the family and my cat

And, most importantly, I made a 'green' purchase that I am in love with! So practical and it's PINK, yaay!

Below are pictures from my experience and pictures of my purchase (P.S. some pics were taken from my Blackberry so sorry for the poor quality) :

This is a view of Manchester, right after taking off. So sunny and green, love it :)
En route to London; the snow covered regions from top.
Now about my purchase... I was at WHS Smith getting some magazines, I came across the 'ECO-HANDLE': a bag handle with a reusable bag. It comes in many colours such as pink, purple, green, blue, black and it is very practical and useful. The handle opens up from the side and the reusable bag can be taken out from there. What's amazing is that you can add other bags, as the handle can fit up to 3 bags! I love how handy it is, because I can just keep the handle in my bag everyday and not even notice it. This will ensure that I never have to use a plastic/paper bag again. I also LOVE that it comes in many colours :)

The Ecohandle perfectly fits in my bag!

The bag out of the handle and empty.
With a few things inside.

The bag is water repellent, with a very lightweight yet strong fabric!

More randoms from the airport:

When finally on the flight to Amman, I got to hang out with Captain Walid Nazzal in the cockpit. I Enjoyed feeding my curiousity with questions on which button does what, and on how exactly can he know where we're going. It was really scary looking into nothing but pitch darkness and clouds! We also had a very interesting conversation about 'Green Passengers' and on planes' fuel consumption... Will blog about that later :)

Sorry about the poor quality of the pictures, they were taken from my phone!

So many buttons! Very confusing but Captain Walid made it sound so easy and simple!

Good luck to all those yet to travel, I really hope you're not affected by the horrible snow!

xoxo,

Anoud

Favourite Eco-Bag: My Bag Cares

My Bag Cares

My favourite eco-bag out there is this amazing 'My Bag Cares' eco-bag. I love it so much because it's very spacious, stylish, and makes a strong statement. What is also amazing about this is that for every 'My Bag Cares' purchased, a tree is planted!!! The bag is only made of natural fibres, 55% linen and 45% untreated cotton.

The bag comes with a little card hanging from it that says 'What does your bag do?', and once you open the card, it reads, 'Well... My bag is RESPONSIBLE. It cleans the earth... it prevents litter... it saves cute little sea animals, it donates to charity, and my bag is easy to use.' How cute?!!

Till now sales of 'My Bag Cares' have planted 17114 trees :)

Here are a few pictures of celebrities with their 'My Bag Cares':

My Bag Cares comes in four different styles that can be seen here. You can also purchase your My Bag Cares from the website for $25 each.

Favourite Green Person of the Week

EDWARD NORTON

This week's Favourite Green Person is the talented two-time Oscar nominee Ed Norton, who is known for his roles in movies such as Fight Club, The Incredible Hulk, and The Illusionist.

Not only is he gorgeous and born on the same day as I am, but Edward Norton is also an amazing environmental and social activist, and that is why I absolutely adore and appreciate him. I love celebrities that use their star status and fortune to promote and advocate certain issues, which in Edward Norton's case is preserving the environment.

Despite having a busy career as an actor and filmmaker, his achievements and contributions to the environment are never ending. Throughout the years, Norton has raised over $750,000 for the Massai Wilderness Conservation Trust, which promotes wildlife conservation in the African region. He has also created the 'Solar Neighbors Program' alongside BP Solar to help provide solar panels to low income families.

Check out this video below, where Norton warns against the hazards of plastic bags:

In July of this year, Edward Norton was designated by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, as UN Goodwill Ambassador for biodiversity.

Ban Ki-Moon justified his decision by explaining that,"Edward Norton has brought global star power to global issues. His efforts to preserve biodiversity and promote ecosystem integrity in East Africa have been truly impressive."

Norton hopes that his new role inspires young people to adopt the challenge of environmental protection. "Environmental conservation, climate change, biodiversity are very much the issues that will define my generation", Norton explained.

Please check out his website for more info on his projects and achievements: http://www.crowdrise.com/edwardnorton

Another reason to love him? Well I absolutely love Norton's choice of characters. He is known to play characters who have duel personalities, or ones who are troubled but intelligent. What a genius

Wish more celebrities were like Edward Norton; the world needs more individuals like him. A hero indeed!

Green Eve Appreciates

Eco-bags!

Eco-bags are just amazing...  they are practical, spacious, stylish, they make a statement, and most importantly, are eco-friendly :) Whether you're using them for groceries, uni (for books), or for shopping, they come in different shapes, sizes, designs, material, and sizes, you name it!

Eco-bags can be found in mega stores or big supermarkets in most countries, like ASDA in the UK, Cozmo in Amman, and Spinneys in Dubai. Their purpose is to reduce the use of plastic bags - which are harmful to the environment. But eco-bags can serve many other purposes. I, for one, always keep some in my luggage incase my bag is over weight (which is almost always the case). What's nice about them is that they can be folded and placed neatly in your handbag for later use, like if you are at the library and need to take out a lot of books or if you are out shopping.

Why are plastic bags hazardous?

1. They are made of petrochemicals, which are non-renewable resources.
2. They represent a hazard to wildlife.
3. They can cause damage to people: they decrease sperm levels (Adams beware :p), they act as a neurotoxin, and the litter of plastic bags creates a breeding area of malaria.
4. They are visual pollution: they stay in the environment between 500-1,000 years.
5. It is estimated that one million are used every minute. In the UK, over 13 billion are used per year, and 8 billion of them end up in the landfill.
6. Only 1% of plastic bags are recycled worldwide :(

Did you know that every plastic item that was ever made is still in existence???

Here are a few of our favorite eco-bags, ranging from less than 5 pounds up to around 300 pounds in price:

This is perhaps the most famous of all eco-bags, as celebrities have once made it an 'it' bag! This bag retails in the UK for £5.

The Prada B.Y.O bag, retails for about £180.

This is the 'Flea Bag'. "It was originally designed for the flea market, hence the name, intended to fit all your purchases while shopping. It is not vegan, but the leather uses vegetable dye. The canvas is all organic hemp and cotton, and the ink on the print is water based. There is nothing toxic, and it is handmade in New York." This bag is stylish enough to be used for the beach during summer, or for any other outing or purpose! Retails for about £260, yes that's a lot for an eco-bag but hey, it's justifiable!!!

Finally, this right here is the ASDA bag that we, the Green Eve, use! It is a PP (polypropylene) Woven Bag sold at ASDA for £2 each!!. It fits up to 15Kgs and is very practical and spacious! WE LOVE!

Don't forget to pick up your eco-bags ASAP! There are plenty to choose from, so pick whichever suits you.
Here is a website that can help you choose from a variety of shapes, sizes, and colours of eco-bags: http://www.crazybags.co.uk/

Love,

Green Eve <3
