The London Tower Farm: The Future of Residential Living & Urban Agriculture

Would you want to live in a beehive for humans? I would!

The London Tower Farm is a design proposed by Mexican firm Xome Arquitectos and is set in London, alongside the Thames and the London Bridge. It serves as a residential building, as well as a vertical farm, in order to create a mini eco system.

Through the LOFT AWR 2011 design competition, Xome Arquitectos proposed the London Tower Farm, which essentially is a ‘honeycomb-like tower with apartments around the perimeter and growing levels in the centre’. Xome based their design mainly on the idea that more than 70% of the world’s population will be living in urban areas by 2050. That is where the vertical farm had to be integrated, since urban agriculture will become a necessary approach to feeding the future urbanites.  The design is also focused on creating a place where people can carry out multiple activities like shopping, working, living and recreation.

Eco-Elements:

The London Tower Farm is fully self-sufficient and has many great eco-features:

  •          Renewable energy systems on the roof which generate power for the buildin
  •          Rainwater is collected and used for hydroponics, showers and toilets
  •         Food is grown in the centre of the tower for the residents

Love the design! Smart & practical!
